The sod-turning ceremony has now taken place for the prison, which is part of Intea's new legal center (Rättscentrum) in Kristianstad. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2024 and will result in around 80 new job opportunities.

The new prison shows how the Swedish Prison and Probation Service is preparing for the need for more places in the future. In addition to the prison, the building will also contain premises for probation and the national transport unit. The building, which will amount to 16,400 square meters of lettable area, will be the first prison in Sweden to be environmentally certified with BREEAM Excellent.

“The Swedish Prison and Probation Service's investment in Kristianstad provides an important boost to the number of prison places as well as modern premises for probation activities and transport operations. The new building and its design also improve the opportunities to work on recidivism prevention and thereby contribute to a safer society,” says the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's Director General Martin Holmgren.

The first sod for the project was turned by Charlotta Wallman Hörlin, Chief Operating Officer of Intea, Martin Holmgren, Director General of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, Pierre Månsson, municipal councilor at Kristianstad Municipality and Niklas Sparw, Division Manager at NCC Building.

“The sod-turning ceremony for the prison marks an important milestone in the development of the new modern legal center in Kristianstad. It is exciting that we have now started the process of building in this project,” says Charlotta Wallman Hörlin, Chief Operating Officer of Intea.

In addition to premises for the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, the new legal center will also include premises for the Police Authority and the Public Prosecutor's Office. In total, the legal center will contain 35,800 square meters of lettable area.
