Intea and The Swedish Prison and Probation Service have signed a 15-year lease for Härnösand Prison on Sweden’s east coast. The facility was previously closed but will now undergo extensive refurbishment, creating 100 new much-needed places.

The prison was originally built in 1861 and was used by the Prison and Probation Service until 2009, when it was closed. There is a real shortage of custody and prison places in Sweden and the reopening of Härnösand Prison quickly provides new capacity. The reopening is expected to create 80 new jobs in Härnösand.

"The Prison and Probation Service is under pressure, with high occupancy and a real need for new prison places. So it’s great that, together with Intea, we are now able to reopen the old facility in Härnösand. This will provide the service with very welcome additional capacity. The constructive approach to negotiations between the Prison Service and Intea also bodes well for continued cooperation," says Magnus Petersson, Head of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's property unit.

Intea previously acquired the Duvan 1 property, where the Prison and Probation Service will now be the sole tenant. The prison will occupy 7,300 sqm of the total 8,500 sqm of the property, which includes a sports hall and a workshop in addition to prisoner accommodation. The preliminary rental value amounts to SEK 14.9 million and the lease is conditional on government approval. The tenant will take up occupancy in the fourth quarter of 2021.

"We’ve worked hard, together with the Prison and Probation Service, over the autumn and winter to bring this complex project to fruition. In a very short space of time, we’re now providing 100 new places, while also reducing the environmental impact by refurbishing existing buildings instead of constructing new ones. The creation of up to 80 new jobs in Härnösand is an added bonus and it’s great to contribute to that," says Charlotta Wallman Hörlin, Chief Operating Officer at Intea.
